This paper examines how experiences with salient climate events affect workers’ employment preferences. We find that after a region experiences climate disasters, local firms with worse environmental performance fill job vacancies at a slower rate compared to those with better environmental performance. Results from additional analyses suggest that the effect is unlikely driven by climate disasters’ impact on firms’ operations or hiring strategies, but rather due to job seekers’ exposure to climate disasters heightening their awareness of climate change, which leads them to place greater importance on employers’ environmental responsibility. We also document that, after experiencing climate disasters, employees in firms with worse environmental performance leave more negative reviews for their employers and are more likely to move to firms with better environmental performance, suggesting that salient climate events also change current employees’ perceptions of employers. Our findings highlight the consequences of climate risk on businesses from the perspective of employment decisions.
