【内容提要】
Relying on labor unrest as shock to local social stability, we show that state-owned enterprises (SOEs) react to nearby unrest by creating additional employment at the expense of firm productivity. Such effect is larger when labor unrest is in the exposed SOEs’ industries, local fiscal budgets are solid, and governing mayors are better incentivized. SOEs obtain more fiscal benefits when absorbing additional labor. Contrarily, non SOEs do not react to labor unrest, and their performance is unaffected. Further analysis indicates that our labor unrest events appear random. Our findings imply that SOEs can alleviate the adverse economic impacts of labor unrest.
